The Role of Women

As we have endeavored to see what God’s Word teaches about the family, we have discovered there is so much that we can learn from God about the role of fathers, mothers, and children. God has ordained the family from day one to be composed of a father and a mother. These truths are just as immutable as God is. The reality is the family has been fixed by the Creator and culture cannot dictate what a family is to be or not to be.

The term perverted means to distort something from its intended purposes. This is exactly what our culture has done to the family. In order to redirect our attention to God’s design, we must as God’s people, hunger to know what He says the family is to be and do. Over the past few weeks we have looked at the role of the father, but this week we are turning our attention to women, mothers, and wives.

In Scripture, there are numerous passage we could choose for this discussion. However, out of all the Bible, I believe, Titus 2:3-5 is the most comprehensive text as it relates to women and God’s will for them. Before we get to this passage there are some other introductory matters to address. Just to be clear, God’s Word does not disparage women, lower them, or looked down on them. Rather, God’s word elevates their role in the home in significant ways.

First, they are influencers in the home. God has given wives, mother, and women, in general, such powerful roles in the home. In God’s design, women, as wives,  were created to be helpers for their husbands. The Bible, in Genesis, 1:18, God states, “It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Man, in God’s estimation, was not complete without his wife, Eve. Thus, God, seeing man’s condition, created for Adam a helper suitable for him. Women are God’s special creation helping and influencing man for the glory of God. All married men realize this truth all too well. We are a mess without our wives to help us, pray for us, and encourage us to live for the glory of God. Men are not complete with their counterpart.

The woman, in her role as wife, is an influencer of not only her husband but also the children. Solomon in Proverbs 1:8b, states, “And do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”Here we see that Solomon identifies that all wise sons and daughters listen to their parent’s wisdom. Specifically, Solomon is talking about a mother’s influence. A mother’s guidance is a powerful tool when used for the glory of God.

In  2 Tim 1:5 Paul speaks of a mother’s impact. He references thee depth of influence of two generations of godly mothers, “For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.” It had a powerful influence on two people that are now having a powerful influence on others. Lois impacted Eunice and she impacted Timothy and knows he is impacting others for the glory God.

God has designed women with a very powerful and significant role as a wife and a mother. So, moms, do not allow this world to tell you differently. We love you and are grateful for your influence in our lives
